We share the belief of many ancestors, residents, and visitors that the island of Hawaiʻi is a special place of healing.
The Polynesians traveled thousands of miles over open sea to find Hawaiʻi. What drew these brave people across the ocean? Legend suggests that powerful seers among them envisioned this paradise in the North Pacific before setting sail. Native Hawaiians, with their belief in the union of matter and spirit, have long recognized the healing properties of the landscape. Their knowledge drew them to a place in which the spirit of lōkahi, or harmony of body, mind, and spirit, encourages peace and restoration. This concept is reflected in their traditional healing arts, which today are widely accepted and practiced.
The Island of Hawaiʻi is the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands. Unlike the others, which were formed millions of years ago, Hawaiʻi Island is still growing: lava flows from Kīlauea Volcano, on the island’s southeast flank, creating acres of new land each year. A creative force is at work here, a vital spiritual energy pulsing up from the core of the earth and pouring out from the vents of Kīlauea, spreading its life-giving force across the entire island, fueling possibilities of creative synthesis. This life force is felt by visitors and residents alike, something found nowhere else on the world.
Hawaiʻi Island has become a center of healing – a Healing Island® – a place where profound native Hawaiian healing traditions have fused with Eastern and Western medical practices based on centuries of accumulated knowledge. Today, people journey from around the world to experience the rejuvenating energy of the Island and the cultural blend of East and West within the deeply rooted Hawaiian traditions of its original settlers.
